Melanie-Rose Cantin

Mélanie-Rose Cantin was born in Québec, Canada in 1972 and spent her early childhood near the Wendat-Huron, a Native American community on the outskirts of Québec city. One of her strongest and earliest emotional memory is that of the love and respect she felt as a child when she participated to the Wendat-Huron community activities. As a young adult, she attended the University of Toronto where she studied International Development. Her political concerns regarding environmental issues grew and she developed ways through art in which she could share her knowledge, love and understanding of those issues.

Mélanie-Rose’s art roots are deep and they spread across the various cultures and countries she has encountered. While living in Adelaide, Australia (1990), she developed an interest for the paintings of the Australian Aborigines; in Toronto, Canada (1991-1993) her art horizons widened as she experienced the life of a multicultural city; in Quito, Ecuador (1993-1994) she learned about colours while studying the works of Central and South American Masters; and in Rome, Italy (1994-1995) she discovered an interest for Middle Ages and Renaissance artists. She was particularly touched by the way they portrayed religious themes in their works of art.

Mélanie attended Limoilou College studying drawing, ceramics and sculpture. She also attended Laval University where she studied creative writing and drama. In 2003, she was semi-finalist in the Imagining Ourselves project of the International Museum of Women in San Francisco, USA
