Christel Ibsen

Christel, Danish by birth, resides in New York City and Grand Cayman with frequent forays to all corners of the globe. She travels between Europe, the US and the Caribbean, painting the changing seasons.

Although a true Viking in most matters, Christel admits that she prefer the warm tints and soothing winds of the Caribbean to the frozen fog and blustery winds of her Northern childhood.

What fascinates her about waterscapes is the challenge of capturing the three fields of light and hues: Sky… Water…. Land.

“The way they interrelate and reflect is an ever-changing ballet.”

Equally important in her art are her portraits of children.

“Watching a child exploring nature or playing on a beach yields moments of pure delight. Being allowed to paint them is a precious gift.”

Her canvases evolve from working in the creative fields of photography and filmmaking both of which serve as important tools for her art.

When deafness ended a successful career Christel turned inwards towards painting.

“With the silence of deafness came peace and the blissful ability to concentrate on the remaining senses. When painting, my time is transformed into an endless space of color and hues, and it seems as if I enfold a part of nature into myself.

Since then, because of a cochlear implant, Christel miraculous has been given back the ability to hear.

“But painting remains my release, my pleasure … a vocation that found me.”

Christel’s work is represented and sold in Denmark, France, England, the United States, Japan, Holland, Canada and Cayman.
