Carol Owen was born and brought up on the Isle of Wight. She trained at the West of England College of Art and at the Portsmouth College of Art, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors for painting and sculpture. At Manchester University she gained a Certificate in Education with Distinctions in both the theory and practice of the teaching of art.

Carol began her career first as a portrait painter and later as a still- life and landscape painter as well. In search of a variety of landscapes she lived in a number of different parts of Britain including the remote Scottish island of Jura where, through early morning studies of mountains and sea, she became fully aware of the beauty and importance of light. Her portrait sitters include Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal whose portrait now hangs in the Guildhall Art Gallery in the City of London. Carol has recently extended her concept of landscape to include coastlines and rural gardens.

Carol has exhibited in Houston, Dallas, Boston, Hawaii, and the Cayman Islands as well as in London and other parts of Britain. She is a founding member and trustee of the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, and was its first chairman. In 2000 she was made MBE for services to the community
